What Documents Are Needed to Bring a Body Back to Kenya?

Updated 6 October 2026

Repatriating a loved one to Kenya involves more than booking a flight.

Before the body can travel, the family and funeral providers need to make sure the required documents are in place.

According to the source material, Kenya Port Health currently requires advance notification together with several key documents. Pasted text

1. Death certificate

A valid death certificate is one of the main documents required.

It should be available in English or Swahili.

If the original document is issued in another language, the family may need to arrange the appropriate translation and certification.

2. Embalming certificate

The source material lists an embalming certificate among the required clearance documents for international transportation of human remains. Pasted text

This confirms that the body has been prepared appropriately for transport.

3. Identification documents of the deceased

The family should have the deceased personโ€™s identification documents available.

These may include a passport or other recognised identity record, depending on the circumstances.

4. Letter from Kenyan diplomatic representatives

The source material also lists a letter from Kenyan diplomatic representatives in the country where the person died. Pasted text

This forms part of the consular documentation required for the journey.

5. Burial transit permit or cremation certificate

Where the body is being repatriated for burial, a burial transit permit may be required.

If the person was cremated abroad and the ashes are being transported instead, a cremation certificate may be required.

6. Additional approval in some cases

Where the death resulted from a notifiable disease, additional approval may be necessary before transportation can proceed.

This should be confirmed with the relevant health authorities early.

7. The casket must meet transport requirements

The remains must also be transported in a hermetically sealed, airtight and waterproof casket. Pasted text

This is an important part of international transport compliance.

8. Port Health needs advance notice

The source material states that Kenya Port Health asks to be notified at least 24 hours before arrival, transit or departure. Pasted text

Do not leave this until the day of the flight.

Keep one complete document file

Repatriation often involves:

  • funeral director abroad
  • airline
  • embassy or consulate
  • Kenyan funeral director
  • Port Health
  • family representatives

Appoint one coordinator abroad and one in Kenya, and make sure both have the same document set.

Remember

Most repatriation delays do not happen because families do not care.

They happen because one document is missing, one authority was not notified, or different people are working from different information.

Good coordination begins with complete paperwork.
