How Much Do Mortuary Fees Cost in Kenya?

Updated 6 October 2026

There is no single standard mortuary fee across Kenya. Pasted text

Different facilities set their own charges.

These may include:

  • admission
  • daily refrigeration
  • preservation
  • embalming
  • post-mortem facilities
  • viewing
  • chapel use
  • other mortuary services

Why can the final bill be higher than expected?

Families sometimes hear only the daily storage rate.

They later discover that other services have been charged separately.

Before admitting the body, ask for the full fee structure where possible.

The most useful question

Ask:

“What is the daily charge, and what additional charges may appear before release?”

That question can prevent unpleasant surprises.

Other questions to ask

Find out:

  • when daily charges begin
  • whether embalming is separate
  • whether viewing attracts a fee
  • what documents are required for release
  • how payment is made

If burial may be delayed

Factor additional mortuary days into the funeral budget.

One extra week affects more than the burial date.

It may also affect preservation and the amount the family must pay before the body can leave the mortuary.
