How Long Does It Take to Get a Death Certificate in Kenya?

Updated 6 October 2026

Families often ask how long a death certificate will take.

There is no single nationwide turnaround time that can be safely promised.

Processing can depend on whether the death was properly registered, whether the record is easy to trace and whether any information needs correction or further investigation.

Death certificate services are available through Civil Registration offices, Huduma Centres and eCitizen. Pasted text

What can delay the process?

Delays may arise when:

  • the death was not registered correctly
  • names or identification details do not match
  • the burial permit cannot be located
  • the death occurred a long time ago
  • further documentation is required

What if you need it urgently?

A death certificate may be needed for:

  • insurance claims
  • succession
  • pensions
  • banking
  • property matters
  • international repatriation documentation

If there is urgency, ask the Civil Registration office handling the record what turnaround applies to that specific case.

Avoid planning around an unofficial internet estimate.

EFS advice

Keep copies of every document issued during the first stages after the death.

A missing burial permit or inconsistent spelling may seem minor during funeral preparations but can create unnecessary difficulty later.
