What Size of Grave Should We Dig?

Updated 11 October 2026

It sounds like a simple question, until the casket arrives and the family discovers the grave is too narrow, too short, or the lining has taken up more space than expected.

A safer approach is to measure the actual casket first.

For the example in our illustration, the casket is approximately 82 inches long and 28 inches wide. A practical grave footprint is about 8 feet long by 3½ feet wide, giving enough clearance for lowering, positioning and any grave lining.

That extra space matters.

A grave should not be cut to the exact dimensions of the casket. Room may be needed for lowering straps, handles, concrete or block lining, and safe movement during burial.

Before digging, confirm:

  • the actual casket length and width
  • whether the grave will be lined
  • the thickness of the walls
  • soil and ground conditions
  • cemetery, church or family burial-site requirements

Depth should also be confirmed separately, because it can vary depending on the burial site and local requirements.

One of the worst times to discover a measurement problem is when the hearse has already arrived at the graveside.

Measure the casket you actually have, not the one someone assumed you would have.

At Executive Funeral Services, we help families think through these practical details before burial day, including the casket, hearse, pallbearers, lowering equipment and graveside coordination.
