What If a Death Was Never Registered in Kenya?
Updated 6 October 2026
Sometimes a family only discovers years later that a death was never formally registered.
This often becomes a problem when they begin succession, property transfer, pension or other estate matters.
A death not registered within six months is treated as a late registration of death. Pasted text
What may be required?
The source material lists possible requirements including:
- burial permit
- deceased person’s original identification
- hospital records
- affidavit from a relative
- letter from the assistant chief
- police or autopsy report where relevant
The exact documents required will depend on the circumstances of the death and what records still exist.
What does it cost?
The current fees listed in the source material are:
- KSh500 for late registration
- KSh200 for the death certificate
Do not wait until succession
If you know a relative died but no death certificate was ever obtained, it is better to resolve the registration issue before it becomes urgent.
Estate administration is already difficult enough without discovering that one of the most basic civil records is missing.
